Recover abandoned carts on WhatsApp

How to recover abandoned carts on WhatsApp with the API: timing, templates, opt-in, AI and metrics. Better than the 3% email recovery rate.

Recovering abandoned carts on WhatsApp is telling the customer, on the channel they actually open, that they left the order unfinished. The "did you forget something?" email recovers little. WhatsApp, with a template and permission, arrives in seconds and lets you close in the same thread.

The industry landing is eCommerce. This is the playbook.

Why WhatsApp beats email in this flow

  • ~98% open rate vs ~20% for email.
  • Reply in natural language: "do you have size M?".
  • An AI agent can resolve size, shipping and a coupon inside your rules.
  • Payment or the checkout link travels in a button.

It does not win if you use WhatsApp as a long email with three banners. A cart is recovered with one reminder and one bit of help, not a newsletter.

Opt-in at checkout (do not start without this)

At payment, an explicit checkbox:

  • "I agree to be contacted on WhatsApp about this order" (utility / transactional).
  • If you also want promos, another checkbox.

Do not pre-tick both. Do not use the phone "because they typed it for shipping". That puts you at risk of blocks and of the AEPD.

The technical flow: your store (Shopify, PrestaShop, Woo, custom) fires a webhook when the cart has been abandoned for X minutes and there is opt-in. ManyContacts sends the template. Replies land in the inbox.

Timing that does not annoy

TouchWhenGoalCategory
160–120 min"Your cart is still available" + linkMarketing or utility depending on copy
224 hObjection: shipping, size, paymentMarketing
348–72 h (optional)Last notice if stock is realMarketing

No touch at 3 minutes: they are still comparing. No 7 touches in 4 days: they block you.

If the product is perishable or there are 2 units, say so in the first message. If not, do not fake scarcity.

Copy that converts (keep it short)

Bad: "Hi! At SuperStore® we have an extra 15%, free shipping, return whenever you want, also check out these 8 products…"

Good: "Hi Ana, you left the Neon 42 sneakers in the cart (€79). Want me to send the payment link, or do you have a size question?"

One question. One URL button to checkout. Variables: name, product, price.

That is WhatsApp Marketing applied to an event, not to an entire list.

What AI does when they reply

  • Size / colour → check stock. If there is none, offer a real alternative.
  • "It's expensive" → the coupon policy you defined (or hand off to a human).
  • "I already bought it" → close and do not bother them again.
  • Failed payment → a new link, not a speech.

The human steps in on high-ticket, B2B or angry threads. The rest should not wait for the community manager to finish a Reel.

Metrics

  • Carts with WhatsApp opt-in / total carts (if it is 8%, fix checkout, not the template).
  • Sent / blocks.
  • Replies.
  • Recovered orders and revenue.
  • Time to payment after the WhatsApp.

If you only look at reads, you will congratulate yourself on 97% and a 0.4% order rate.

Integration (no Frankenstein)

Options, from cleanest to most fragile:

  1. Native store event → ManyContacts (or Make/Zapier done properly).
  2. Your backend calls the API when the cart expires.
  3. A human stares at the Shopify panel and types by hand (does not scale).

Chat history should be visible next to the order. If the agent does not know what was in the cart, the AI hallucinates.

Mistakes that burn the channel

  • Sending the same copy to someone who already paid (webhook delay).
  • Using an "offers" number different from support: the customer does not trust it.
  • Odd shorteners in the button.
  • Recovering carts from guests with no verified phone.
  • Mixing the flow with a "general sale" campaign the same day.

Products where WhatsApp recovers little (and that is fine)

Very low tickets (a €4 sock): conversation cost and annoyance risk do not pay off. Fully digital self-serve with payment already half done: sometimes email + push is enough. B2B with a 90-day cycle: better a sales rep than a "did you forget the pallet?".

WhatsApp shines in fashion, electronics, training, spare parts, travel, and any ticket where there is a size, date or financing question. If your product needs 20 minutes of explanation, the cart is a qualification, not a one-click.

A/B tests without going mad

Change one thing: the wait in minutes, or the size question, or the payment button. 200 carts per variant. The winner is the one that brings orders, not the one with more "haha yes I forgot". That thread is friendly and does not pay the warehouse.
